Rod and Carmel O’Kane along with their family of 6 children Alice, Camillus, Xavier, Myles, Gemma and Celia are a beef and broad acre farming family based in North East Victoria. The angus cattle have been a significant part of the family farm they have added great value to the mixed farming rotation.

The O’Kane Family started out with 7 young Angus Heifers in the January of 1970. At the time Rod was keen to get into to cattle and since then has developed his herd to a size of 300 breeders. The heifers are decedents of the 7 Wang heifers Ela 6th; Violet 8th and Patsy 11th all go back to: Erica 843 by Cupbearer 59 from Emily 332 by Old Jock 1 out of Beauty (Special thanks to Keith Murdoch for his research.)

It was a journey of passion and love over the last 53 years. Some years more testing than others with droughts causing feed issues. A number of Saturday family lunches were spent on the side of the road with the cattle. An old plow disk over a small fire provided a hot lunch for the kids while moving the cattle from one farm to the other. This memory has been a long standing one for all the O’Kane children and is often spoken about still to this day. The cattle allowed for all the O’Kane children to have a very high level of appreciation for outstanding meat quality and a good understanding of beef in Australia.

For 35 years we used “Naranghi” Bulls from J and AC Bott located at Yarrawonga. When this herd was dispersed, it looked like we had come to a dead in with in finding another herd free of American genetics, but we were fortunate enough to find “Sparta” and Keith Murdoch and have been using these bulls for the last 15 years. The Bulls that have been sourced from Sparta have been ideal for out herd development.

As the mob size grew this meant Rod had to investigate into a new set of cattle yards to ensure the safety of both workers and cattle. The introduction of a 200 head Arrow Quip set of cattle yards was a turning point and has allowed for a faster and safer handling of the cattle. The new yards also allowed for safety for any operators including the local vets.

After finishing her Ag Degree daughter Gemma has taken an interest in the day to day running of the cattle and with the continuous guidance from Rod, the future of the cattle will continue to grow. Gemma would like to add value to the cattle by introducing a modern record and tracking system.

Outside the cattle the O’Kane Family Farm are large producers of cereal hay, broad acre cropping and have a strong passion for harness racing. Rod and Carmel enjoy family time and having the grandkids up for holidays.
