Thologolong was awarded 100 yrs of breeding by the Australian Angus Society - Est 1886. Kerrie has been handed the Thologolong reins from her father Peter Alexandra Sutherland 2nd(Deceased 2022) after purchasing her first six females in 2020. Kerrie's daughters Rosie and Daisy are enthusiastic fifth-generation breeders. This year 2023 we are celebrating 137 years of combined family, breeding Angus cattle.

The Thologolong stud was founded by Peter Alexandra Sutherland (my great-grandfather) in 1886 importing cattle from Scotland via New Zealand. Among the very first cows was Vissicitude of Glamis, one of the great foundation breeding females from the Leah families, still in the herd today.

A bull who exerted tremendous influence in the early years was King of Richmond, 13556 H.B. who came from Scotland just before the turn of the century. He sired many great breeding cows of scale and substance. Another outstanding bull to leave his mark on the herd was Envy of Bywell, HB94, also originating from Scotland Other early sires of note included Edinglassie Volaire purchased unseen from Mr. White when he visited Thologolong in the early 20s, and Hasting by Jingo, who came from Bontharambo.

In 1936 Abington Matador was purchased at the Sydney Show by our family, he was the very first Australian-bred bull to be used at Thologolong. In 1947 Baron Beauford of Mangatoro was purchased over the phone from the Danniverke(NZ) My family talk highly of this outstanding bull with a wonderful temperament, he exerted tremendous influence on the Thologolong herd, leaving outstanding bulls and females.

A famous female line I have in the herd today, Thologolong Flossy originally purchased from the Underbank of Sol Green dispersal in 1952 ‘Flossy of Waiterenui Many great sires at Thologolong, including Thologolong Tom Jones who was champion in Melbourne and Sydney and Champion at the first Angus show and sale, he sired the champion carcass at Melbourne Royal in 1968 ( the year I was born) 1972 Creekton Kamark from Tasmania was purchased from Tasmania, producing a magnificent line of females. 1980’s we were at our peak, producing Thologolong Think Big and his Melbourne Grand Champion son Think Twice winning three years consecutively, both these outstanding bulls are sired by the famous Hingaia 322 (NZ).

In 2004 my father Peter purchased an outstanding bull from the Sparta herd, Sparta Z13 going back to the famous Hingaia 469(NZ), My six foundation females are all sired by this great bull, leaving great feet and udders, these 14-year matrons are breeding true to type today Thologolong has based their breeding program on line breeding like my Grandmother Helen Sutherland who started the Murray Grey breed of cattle, The very first Australian breed. Helen followed a system called “ Mendel’s theory of heredity”, the great successes of Thologolong were all based on line breeding.

My dream from a very young age was to visit my heritage country Scotland and work with Angus cattle. 1987 this dream came true leaving Australia at 18 yrs of age with a letter from Enid Fisher, the CEO of Angus Society of Australia introducing me to Bob Anderson the secretary of the Aberdeen Angus cattle society, 6 Kings Place, Perth, Scotland. I am forever grateful for this experience.

I am extremely passionate and proud to be a member of the Aberdeen Angus Breeders Association of Australia & NZ to continue the legacy of producing magnificent foundation Angus cattle, for our Australian conditions, finishing off the grass, this quality herd will complement any breeding program.
